VOICES OF AMERICA: LEARNING FOR LIFE

SPANISH FOR THE WORKPLACE AND TRAVEL

Learning Easy as Uno, Dos, Tres!

Everyone is aware that this is SUPERBOWL Weekend.  If you are a real football fan and are either a long-time student of Spanish, a Native speaker of Spanish or someone who is just beginning to learn Spanish, there are lots of opportunities to combinine your passion for football (the American kind, this weekend) and the Spanish language.  There are so many television and radio programs airing that are interviewing the players, coaches, former players, former coaches, athletes from other sports, celebrities from many genres, politicians and so on and so on.  Of course, Spanish language stations have these interviews as well so you can start by listening to or watching these shows and taking advantage of the closed captioning and/or taping the television programs.  You can do the same with the English shows that have SAP and thus give you the audio of their shows en espanol.  ESPN Deportes is another source.  IT even has SportsCenter en espanol. These are just some ways to have your love of football en espanol.  Disfrutalo! (Enjoy!)

We will talk more about ways to engage yourself in the speaking of Spanish tomorrow.

Look for our Facebook link  or go to Facebook “Spanish for the Workplace” so that we can make this dialog an interactive one.

VOICES OF AMERICA: LEARNING FOR LIFE

SPANISH FOR THE WORKPLACE AND TRAVEL

Learning Easy as Uno, Dos, Tres!

Did you know that over 500 million people in the world speak Spanish and that it is the easiest language to learn?  It is also the world’s most studied language (probably because of this fact?!)  You know how many rules and exceptions to rules that there are in English.  You know that there are many confusing rules of grammar, syntax, usage and pronunciation.  You can memorize helpful hints to learn English such as “i before e, except after c….,” only to find that there are exceptions to the exceptions!  In Spanish, there are very few exceptions.  The language is quite literal.  To learn the basic pronunciation is quite simple.  There are probably less than 20 different sounds that you need to learn and once you learn them, that is it.  They are what they are.  There are no silent e’s!  When you see a sound or a symbol it is what it is.  Even the blends are standard.  Once you learn them, they are just there!   In beginning classes, you do not have to worry about learning grammar.  You want to learn to communicate.  You do not have to worry about conjugating verbs or even using the right forms of verbs.  You want to be able to get your point communicated.  You want to learn how to ask a question and understand the answer.  You do not have to worry about all of the forms of words that are masculine and feminine or singular or plural.  You speak first so that you are comfortable with the language.  You need to speak the language with someone one and have them speak with you.  The pronunciation and phrases are the key to learning a language so you really do not want to waste your money buying tapes, CDs or language programs.  You need to participate in classes that have you speak the language. Again, you learn a language by speaking the language and engaging yourself in it in many different ways!

We will talk more about ways to engage yourself in the speaking of Spanish tomorrow.

I have returned from our trip out west and had a number of opportunities to speak to people about languages and learning in different parts of the country especially as we stopped in several of the National Parks. I will speak about this more in the days to come. The bottom line is that you can learn to speak a language by speaking it and that it really is not that difficult if you work WITH someone!

Remember we are working on the new site, the new classes for Mommy/Daddy and their children as well as our focus this winter with two specialized classes – one on Friday afternoons for anyone connected with Medical fields and one on Monday evenings for anyone who plays a role as a first responder.  We are also running Wednesday classes, both day and evening in the general areas of the workplace, the community and travel, but also will definitely meet the individual goals of the participants.

We are having a three hour workshop on Friday, February 10th that will give those of you in the Space Coast area that cannot commit to a series of classes, but want a basic introduction to Spanish.  This “class” will give you the basic pronunciation, greetings, numbers, colors and how to ask questions and obtain general information in Spanish.  Participants will get books and CDs to take with them and follow up options with which to continue their studies.

We have also made available advanced classes in small groups as well as onsite at your location and via your smartphone or webcam.  The onsite and webcam/smartphone options are available for the basic classes as well.

Remember – you learn a language by speaking it! Voices of America makes Learning Spanish Easy as Uno, Dos, Tres!

We are also working to help people for whom English is not their first language, learn English … which is quite a challenge, but as in the study of Spanish, the initial study of English that we teach is without grammar, just what one needs to know!

Learning Easy as Uno, Dos, Tres!

Again, you learn a language by speaking the language and engaging yourself in it in many different ways!

I would like to continue the discussion that we started yesterday about using music in your study of Spanish. The Premios Lo Nuestro (roughly “our awards”) will be aired on Univision on Thursday, the 16th of February.  These awards will introduce you to a wide variety of people in many Latin fields of entertainment and the arts and other cultural icons as well.  The show will be televised in both English and Spanish and there will be closed captioning, so if you record the show, you can probably do a lot to increasing your understanding of contemporary Latino America and improve your Spanish.

Tomorrow  evening at 7 pm, Univision will present the first show in a new series produced by Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez.  The show is called “Q Viva ” and is a celebration of all things and people associated with Latino culture and entertainment.  It is billed as a reality show a la “American Idol,” but the previews looked more like a documentary explaining the highlights of Latino culture throughout the world.  We will have to see.

I am travelling to Arizona tomorrow to visit my mother and some of the National Parks and monuments in Arizona.  Hopefully, I will be bringing more insights to you from there.

If you like music, listen to music en español as you are studying Spanish.  Not only will you improve your pronunciation skills, but if you download the lyrics, you can increase your vocabulary as well. There are many types of Spanish music represented on the show, “Te Desayuno Alegre” which be seen on Univision each weekday morning from 6-7 am.  This can be a place for you to start if you are not familiar with Latino music or the various artists.  You can tape the program and use the closed captioning as well!  The  Grammys will be televised  on February 12 th and include a number of Latin nominees.

Tonight with the President giving the State of the Union Address, you can challenge yourslf and your Spanish language skills by using the SAP feature on your television or if you pride yourself on your understanding of the speech as it was given, tape the speech en espanol as well.  It will be on Telemundo, Gala, and Univision. (Check your program guide for local times.  I did see that there was one show on from 11:30 pm to 1:30 am.)  You can use the closed captioning, stop the tape to go over portions and listen to the Spanish newscaster’s analysis as well as listening and broadening your ear and vocabulary skills.  There will be more tomorrow morning on Despierta America, Las Tijeras, Hoy and El Gordo y La Flaca to name of the shows that you might look at tomorrow if you are up for the challenge!

The NBA season is in full swing.  If you are a basketball fan you know that you can go to your settings and get the audio en español by using the SAP option.  You can also look at ESPN Deportes and SportsCenter en español .  This is a way to practice your Spanish while feeding your passion for basketball and sports in general as well!  There are many soccer games on the Spanish language staions that you can watch also.  You can use the closed captioning to see the Spanish words too.  (Did you know that soccer is the most watched spectator sport in the world?)
